Daily Book Graphics #139 / Sports Cars

The dangers of drifting

As a collector of Golden Guides, I was pretty thrilled to find the Golden Guide to Sports Cars at the the flea market last week. I new of it, but had never actually seen it. It was published in 1966 and updated in 1968. It is a bit of a weird subject for Golden Guides, it seems like it would be out of date as soon as it appeared. This is my favorite era for cars so I really like these illustrations. Although it would be nice to see the sports cars in their native environments like the Golden Guides do for mammals or birds. The one thing that bothers me is that the black block of right justified text in the upper left seems like it should be aligned with the bottom of "Sports," it's 1/8 of an inch to high for no reason.

Daily Book Graphic #136 / Black-eyed Blonde

Two more from my trip to the flea market, both from 1962. I previously posted some very different Perry Mason covers in DBG #112. I like the use of arrows.

Daily Book Graphic #135 / Helvetica Peanuts

I found these 1958 Peanuts compilations at the flea market on Sunday, I was really surprised by how restrained (good) the design is. I don't usually spend any time thinking about the work of Charles Schulz, but coincidentally, I recently read an interview with Seth where he talked about his design of the Fantagraphics Peanuts reissues, which are great:

Shopping Carts in Antennae Magazine

I'm happy to say that there is an interview with me in the latest issue of Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture. The interview is a fairly in depth discussion of the Stray Shopping Cart Project. Antennae is a online/PDF download publication that:
...combines a heightened level of academic scrutiny of animals in visual culture, with a less formal and more experimental format designed to cross the boundaries of academic knowledge, in order to appeal to diverse audiences including artists and the general public alike.
My own interests are very much in line with Antennae's. This latest issue is full of fascinating articles and interviews, so make sure you check it out.

4th of July

I spent the evening of the 4th at a marina in the Buffalo harbor where a friend keeps his boat. It was a real Yacht Rock scene, and a nice way to escape the mortar fire in my neighborhood.

Daily Book Graphic #134 / Age of the Guerilla

I found a lot of good DBG material out at the Clarence flea market today. This 1968 book is one example, more to follow. Design: Art Klevenz
