I picked up this book at a garage sale a few years ago. I wish I had had it when I was a kid, the illustrations (by Harvey McNaught) are effective and mysterious.
The face looking out of the submarine window reminded me of something and I finally figured out what it is; the guy in the lower right corner of this detail of Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights:
