The Backyard Photographs of Rick Lieder

I just discovered the backyard Bird photographs of Rick Lieder via Boing Boing. I really like the shots of birds in flight, he has a book coming out of the series, see it here. He also does insect photography, which I like a lot less, they seem overly manipulated.

I have my own Bird photography project which still needs to be put online. You can see a samples here.

A lot of the photos remind me of Hiroshige's bird prints.

I noticed those on BoingBoing, too, Julian (and posted a similar item on my new sorta-gardening blog). Your own "Attempts" look pretty interesting--I gather the # in the title is the # in a sequence of attempts to, er, shoot the bird(s)?

I just checked out your new blog, cool. My neighbor actually used to garden at night, until he had a stroke a few months ago. He was always around to chase away the hookers and johns who park on our street.

As far as my Bird project goes,I number the attempts I make at shooting a bird. I describe the project in my artist statement lingo this way: "The series has become both an attempt to document the fleeting quality of wildlife encounters and an exploration of the persistent desire (in myself and others) to take possession of animals through documentation and species identification."

I have been doing it for years, but I've never done a show of the work. I'm hoping to get more of it on the web in the next couple months.
