The images above are from the 1976 edition of the Roger Tory Peterson Guide to Mammals. Below is the cover of the fifth printing of the 1952 original. The color plates are largely the same in both books. Someday I would like to have the entire 1970s RTP series.

This is the 1975 edition of the Peterson Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of Eastern and Central North America. This era of Peterson guides is my favorite for cover design.

Daily Book Graphics #131 / Field Book of Insects

This is the third edition of Field Book of Insects, published in 1935. The first edition was published in 1918. Unfortunately, the color printing of the 1930's can't do justice to the quality of these illustrations. The hand lettered labels are really nice.

Daily Book Graphics #114 / Birds of Japan

I got this 2007 field guide in Tokyo last year. I wish I could have purchased more Japanese field guides. The bird and insect sections of the chain book stores are probably ten times the size of what you get at the average Barnes & Noble here. Despite the title being in English, the only roman characters on the inside are the Latin names of the species.

I love the logo for the Wild Bird Society of Japan.

Daily Book Graphics #109 / Battlefields

This book was published in 1973. I found it at a library sale in South Carolina. The inside back cover lists other titles in the series including Scottish Lochs, The Scottish Peaks, The Welsh Peaks and Field Guide to Bird's Nests, I might have to hunt those down.
