This is the sort of booklet for children where the child pastes cards/stamps into designated blank spaces. According to the back cover the cards came in packages of Red Rose Tea, Coffee and Instant Coffee and Blue Ribbon Tea, Coffee and Instant Coffee. Lucky for me the young boy who had this booklet (Robert, his name is written on the inside cover) collected all of the cards. The booklet was published by the Canadian Audubon Society in 1962. Everything is in French and English.

I just found this book today at Rust Belt Books in Buffalo. I love this series of guides, I already have guides for the birds of Eastern and Southern Africa so this works out nicely.

I also like the way the spines look on the shelf

I bought this at a library book sale in Charleston, South Carolina a couple of years ago. As I have mentioned before, I really like this kind of cover design from the 1960s and 70s. Unfortunately the cover is in rough shape. More African mammals in DBG #76. © 1971

Daily Book Graphics #91

OK, so for the first time in the course of this project I have missed a day. This post is back dated so it all flows together. In the future when I travel (I'm still in NYC), I'll have to remember to make better notes to prepare for the posts, I forgot to write down the illustration credits for the above images. They are from the Alien World: A Complete Illustrated Guide published in 1980. I posted illustrations from another book in the series in DBG #13, that one was a bit ridiculous, but this one goes to whole other level. The weirdest thing is the crossover between futuristic sci-fi imagery and Conan the Barbarian style fantasy characters. 

Daily Book Graphics #76 / Small Mammals of West Africa

These are from the great series, West African Nature Handbooks, I previously posted from West African Snakes from the series in DBG #11. This edition was published in 1960, the illustrations are by Clifford Lees. Following the introduction of the book we find an obituary that tells us that the author, A.H. Booth, died shortly after completing the manuscript. He was only 30 years old. He served as the general editor of the series and had planned to write a guide to large West African Mammals. Africa is so well known for its large mammals that you almost never hear about the wide variety of squirrels, civets, bats and small monkeys that live there. There are many species I'd never heard of before encountering this book. I like Lees' illustration style, particularly the way he uses the backgrounds for context.

Daily Book Graphics #70 / Water Birds

This blog has been stuck in the 60's and 70's for a while now, so I'm going to back a lot further with this one. It's Chester A. Reed's 1916 Bird Guide: Water Birds, Game Birds and Birds of Prey. Reed produced a series of pocket sized (3.25 x 5.5 inches) in the teens, they appear to have gone into many impressions, as I have other books from the series from the 1930's. They must have been among the earliest full color bird guides. The illustrations measure 2.5 x 1.5 inches and have a matchbox quality to them.

These illustrations are from Open Air Guides: Guide to Beetles, by Jan Bechayne, published in 1956. It is for "those interested in naming the common British and European Beetles, and also for those seeking an introduction to the more detailed study of these insects."

Daily Book Graphics #50 / Birds of East Africa

I have a small but growing collection of Field Guides. I look for them in used book stores and at garage sales, it would be easy to buy many of the books I'm looking for on Ebay, but that seems too easy. One of the things I like about these old guides is that sometimes the previous owner has checked off the birds they have spotted. The Birds of East Africa, is full of check marks. I like the idea that the book, that I now own, has been carried to the other side of the earth and thumbed through in the presence of the birds it depicts. I have posted some of the covers from this collection in the past but I'm going to do a little bit of recycling to get them into the Daily Book Graphics Project, nobody was reading back then anyway.

Daily Book Graphics #37 / Insects of Japan

I bought Field Guide Vol. 11 Insects of Japan (©1993) in Tokyo last year. I generally don't like photography based field guides (despite being the author of one), but this one does it right. The photographs in this book are all very crisp and give more space around the subject than most photo guides.
